The track is formed by a row of rollers with their axes sloping downwards w.r.t. the horizontal; and between the rollers are stationary base plates (a). In the direction of the cooling bed, plates (a) are followed by workpiece braking plates (b) which are raised and lowered. Plates (b) possess a "staircase" profile, and deliver the bars towards fixed plate (c), at which position the reciprocating rakes on the bed can pick up the hot bars. Plates (b,c) form the prongs of a comb; and the reciprocating rakes on the bed enter the gaps between the prongs to pick up each hot bar.
